Lower Dauphin Teams Win Envirothon

Three teams of Lower Dauphin High School students took home accolades in the annual Dauphin County Envirothon on April 28. The team of Colee Baker, Emma Dickinson, Abby English, Anna Mauger and Carolyn O'Donnell placed first; the team of Avery Book, Jason Carver, Conor Grubb, Luke Johns and Austin Little came in second; and the team of Michael Estes, Nicole Estes, Alek McGlaughlin, Draker Risser and Zachary Simpson placed fourth.

The Envirothon is an environmental education program made available to Pennsylvania Conservation Districts in partnership with related state and federal agencies and other organizations. The Envirothon program is designed to test high school students' knowledge of Pennsylvania's natural resources and the environmental sciences. The program emphasizes the importance of environmental sensitivity while stressing a need to achieve a social, ecological, and economic balance. Envirothons are held every spring in counties across Pennsylvania. Participating high schools provide teams of up to five students who are tested in five subject areas or ecosystem areas - aquatics, forestry, soils, wildlife, and a current issue. A different current environmental issue is selected every year. The winning team from each county is eligible to participate in the state-wide Envirothon and possibly the national Envirothon.

Lower Dauphin's first-place team advanced to the state-level competition on May 10. Due to the virtual nature of the event this year, a winner will be announced on Thursday, May 27.
