In April, the Penn State Master Gardeners will accept applications for its 2022 class. Training includes a weekly three-hour class beginning in October and ending in March. Class topics include botany, plant propagation, soil health and fertilizer management, composting, controlling pests safely, entomology, plant diseases, vegetables, lawn care, pruning, woody ornamentals, herbaceous plants, native plants, weeds, and invasives.
The Master Gardener program is recruiting people who have a strong interest in horticulture and enjoy communicating with, teaching, and learning from other community gardeners. A commitment to ongoing volunteer work is also needed.
Potential trainees are asked to attend one of the virtual information sessions scheduled at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 26, or at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 31. The introductory sessions are free, but registration is required. Visit http://www.extension.psu.edu and search for "Master Gardener Training - Lancaster" to find details and to register for one of the sessions.
The 2022 Master Gardener class will be selected based on the application and interview. The fee to participate in the program covers the cost of the manual and instructions. Limited financial aid and cost-sharing opportunities are available.
