Memorial Day Ceremony, Awards Event Held

Members of American Legion Post 455, Stewartstown, held a Memorial Day ceremony and scholarship awards presentation at the Stewartstown Cemetery on May 26. The Memorial Day ceremony honored the men and women who have given their lives in service to the United States and those who have served or are continuing to serve in the military; post commander Bobby O'Farrell gave opening remarks honoring these individuals. Following the Memorial Day ceremony, Post 455 presented college scholarship awards to area high school seniors.

Vice commander Ken Benway, representing Legion members, awarded scholarships to the following students: Rebecca Mathison, $5,000; Brendan McCully, $2,500; and Alex Nielsen, $1,000. Auxiliary president Shawn Hofler presented $1,000 awards to Stephanie Kowalski, Ashley Grove, Lauren Gable, and Addyson Creamer. Sons of the American Legion (SAL) adjutant Marty Waltemeyer, representing SAL commander Brad Swords, presented awards to Louis Sentman, $2,000; Alex Nielsen, $2,000; and Elizabeth Ulmer, $1,000.

Post 455 presented $20,000 in scholarships in 2018 and $17,500 in 2019 to area seniors to assist in their college studies. For information on the scholarships, students may contact their high school guidance counselor or O'Farrell at 717-309-3881.
