Mohler Center Posts Schedule

The Mohler Center was awarded one of only 40 grants given to Pennsylvania senior centers. The center's $34,000 grant will be spent on new furniture.

The center also received a grant from Dauphin County Area on Aging to help pay some of its ongoing maintenance bills.

Farmer's market vouchers will be distributed on Wednesday, June 12, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. or while supplies last. The program is for Dauphin County residents age 60 and over. Applicants must meet these annual income guidelines: $23,107 for one person or $31,284 for two people. They should bring proof of their age and residency. They may stop by the office for more details or to complete a proxy form if they are unable to come to the distribution day.

The June Picnic Social is slated for Friday, June 21, at 11:30 a.m. The Shueys, a husband and wife duo, will provide musical entertainment. A picnic lunch of grilled burgers, pasta salad, baked beans, fresh fruit, and ice cream sandwiches will be served. There is a cost, and reservations are due by Tuesday, June 18.

Medicare 101 will be offered on Thursday, June 27, at 9 a.m. Dauphin County Apprise counselors will provide information for those who will soon be on Medicare, are new to Medicare, or have questions. To register, readers may contact Shannon Vallier at 717-780-6130, ext. 6147.

The Christmas in July Lunch and Games will take place on Friday, July 19, at 11:30 a.m. The event is free of charge. Donations will be accepted for Cocoa Packs. Items needed are cases of water, sports beverages, granola bars, canned meals (such as stew, chili, or soup), canned tuna, canned food with no-spill lids, single-serve cereals, juice boxes, rice or pasta packs, boxed or bagged pasta, single-serve cereal boxes, or monetary donations toward the purchase of these items. Throughout July, donations for Cocoa Packs may placed in bins in the lobby. Registration for the Christmas in July event is required by Tuesday, July 16.

Volunteers are needed to help with Cocoa Packs Summer Feeding Program to make nutritious meals for children at the center at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 25; Monday, July 22; and Wednesday, Aug. 14. Volunteers are also needed to help pack bags at Derry Township Middle School on Thursday, July 18, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Volunteers may sign up in the office.

Lunch and Learn with the attorney general's office will take place on Monday, Aug. 5, at noon. James from Senior Protection Resources in the Office of Attorney General will visit and discuss scams, abuse, and victimization. Lunch will be chicken Caeser wraps, pasta salad, and dessert. The lunch is free, but registration is required by Thursday, Aug. 1.

The center will add a Silver Sneakers class on Fridays at 8:15 a.m. starting in June. The class will feature some new formats, including Boom Muscle, Move It, and stable balance classes. Kim Eichinger will teach the class.

Diabetes support groups facilitated by a licensed practical nurse from Penn State meet at the center and offer coping mechanisms, barriers, diet support, exercise, and more. Type 1 support will be offered on Tuesday, June 25, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and on Tuesday, July 23, from 1 to 2:30 p.m., with Type 2 support set for Tuesday, July 2, from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

A trip to the Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C., and Arlington National Cemetery will take place on Thursday, Aug. 1, with departure from the center at 6:30 a.m. and return at approximately 9 p.m. After visiting the museum, attendees may purchase lunch in the museum cafe and then tour the grounds at Arlington National Cemetery. There is a cost, and registration and prepayment are required by Monday, July 1.

A "Christmas With the Philly Pops" trip will be offered on Friday, Dec. 20, with an 8:30 a.m. departure from the center and an approximate 8:30 p.m. return. The group will visit Love Park for the vendor fair, weather permitting. Following lunch, the group will go to the Kimmel Center for the show. There is a cost, and registration is required by Friday, Nov. 1.

A trip to see "Tina: The Tina Turner Musical" will be offered on Wednesday, March 18, 2020, with departure from the center at 7 a.m. and return at approximately 9 p.m. The group will eat at an Italian restaurant. There is a cost, and registration is due by Monday, July 29.
