Attendees are asked to sign in at the front desk for each event they attend. They are also asked to check the socialization box.
The center has started making small pillows for the Penn State Health Breast Center. The pillows are given to patients following procedures to make their journey home more comfortable. To volunteer, readers may stop by the center on Thursdays between 9 and 11 a.m.
A diabetes support group meets at the center and is facilitated by a licensed practical nurse from Penn State. Support for those with Type 1 diabetes will be offered on Tuesday, March 19, from 1 to 2:30 p.m., and support for those with Type 2 diabetes will be available on Tuesday, March 26, from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
An insurance Lunch and Learn will be offered on Monday, March 18, at noon. Joe and Jason from an area insurance group will share how individuals can make the most of their retirement. Topics will include preparing for unforeseen medical issues, tax-efficient wealth transfers, and ways to guarantee income for life. A game will be played. Lunch will be chicken Alfredo, salad, and dessert. Reservations are required by Thursday, March 14.
On Tuesday, March 19, from 10 to 11 a.m., Jay from a local health, insurance, and financial broker will be available to help individuals switch from Medicare or Advantage plans. Readers may call the center for an appointment.
The Hershey Community Center open house will take place on Saturday, March 23, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Hershey Rec Center on Cocoa Avenue. Individuals may stop by to see the latest design, get an update on construction, and enjoy light refreshments.
A Nutrition Month Lunch with Robert Torres, acting Pennsylvania secretary of aging, will take place on Thursday, March 28, at noon. The event will include a free nutritious lunch and a meet-and-greet with Torres. Reservations are required by Tuesday, March 26.
Also on March 28, the center will be the site of a spaghetti dinner benefiting the Hershey Community Chorus. Dinner will be available from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., and takeouts will be available. Tickets may be purchased in the office or at the door.
During a Lunch and Learn on Monday, April 8, at noon, Jay Bhagat will present an educational workshop. Bhagat is regional director for a nonprofit that specializes in educating retirees about the do's and don'ts of retirement. Lunch will be pierogies with kielbasa and dessert. Reservations are required by Thursday, April 4.
A Lunch and Learn will also take place on Monday, April 15, at noon. Attendees will be able to meet Angus Patterson, executive director of a hospice and palliative care entity, and learn about the additional services that will soon be available at a local retirement community. Lunch will be chicken salad over greens, along with dessert.
The center has also slated several trips. A Blue Angels Experience in Annapolis will be offered on Tuesday, May 21, with departure from the center at 7 a.m. and return time set at approximately 7:30 p.m. The day will include free time, lunch on one's own, and a cruise into the bay to watch the elite Navy pilots, the Blue Angels, on their practice day. There is a cost, and registration is required by Friday, March 15.
A trip to the Museum of the Bible and Arlington National Cemetery has been set for Thursday, Aug. 1. The group will depart from the center at 6:30 a.m. and return at approximately 9 p.m. There is a cost, with registration required by Monday, July 1.
A trip to see "Come From Away" on Broadway will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 6, with departure from the center at 7 a.m. and return at approximately 9:30 p.m. The production tells the true story of the community of Gander, Newfoundland, which hosted stranded travelers when 38 planes were diverted there on Sept. 11, 2001. The day will include motorcoach transportation, a luncheon, and orchestra seats. There is a cost; reservations are required by Thursday, May 9.
