Mount Gretna Art Show Set

Aug 17, 2019 -

The 45th annual Mount Gretna Art Show will be held on Saturday, Aug. 17, and Sunday, Aug. 18, on the streets and in the parks of Mount Gretna. The show will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Aug. 17 and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Aug. 18, rain or shine.

The Mount Gretna Art Show features fine artists from across the country. This year's show will feature 260 exhibitors, selected from nearly 500 applicants, as well as an Emerging Artists area for artists who have not exhibited previously.

The art show will host Mountain Road Band from Harrisburg on Aug. 18 at 3 p.m. in the Mount Gretna Playhouse. Admission to the concert will be included with Aug. 18 show admission.

Children's events will include a percussion craft led by Gretna Music and drum circles on the Mount Gretna Playground led by Joyful ViBraysions from York. The Kids' Art Show, created for families, is scheduled for both days under the direction of Christa Eck. Held at the Chautauqua Playground, the event is scheduled to occur from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. Children will sell their artwork and crafts. Children's activities will also include make-and-take art activities, face painting, caricatures, and spin art.

Daily entertainment will include Trist N' Shout, consisting of street performers who will create balloons, juggle and walk on stilts in and around the park area known as the Fairy Garden.

The art show will feature a gourmet food court of local restaurants and caterers, and Mount Gretna restaurants will also be open.

The entertainment schedule on Saturday will consist of the following performances: Lucille at 10 a.m., Don Johnson at noon, the Jayplayers at 2 p.m., and Humble Gathering at 4 p.m. On Sunday, the Carmitchell Sisters will perform at noon; Roberts, Galbraith, Briody, Vollmer will perform at 1:30 p.m.; and Mountain Road Band will perform at 3 p.m.

Proceeds from the art show are used to support cultural programs of the Pennsylvania Chautauqua and to maintain the Chautauqua's historic buildings and grounds. The show also contributes substantially to the Mount Gretna Volunteer Fire Company and funds a variety of community projects throughout Mount Gretna.

There is an admission fee. Children under 12 will be admitted for free. The admission fee includes parking in designated parking locations.

This year, all parking will be at Soldiers Field on Timber Road in Mount Gretna, eliminating the need for shuttles from Philhaven Hospital. Upon arrival, patrons will be directed to the appropriate parking area. During the art show weekend, traffic flow in and out of Mount Gretna will be substantially altered. Route 117 will be closed from 6 a.m. on Aug. 17 to 5 p.m. on Aug. 18. All routes will be clearly marked and staffed.

More than 200 volunteers from throughout the community help visitors find their way and keep things running smoothly at the art show. Kerry Royer and Linda Bell manage the logistics, and Bill Care and Mike Bell provide operational management.
