The Manheim Township Education Foundation (MTEF) board of directors voted to approve the Grant Committee's recommendation to award 15 grants totaling just over $77,176 for the spring 2019 cycle. These grants are made possible through EITC donations, memorial funds, institutional grants, general donations, and contributions from MTEF community partners.
Grant recipients, teachers, and amounts are as follows: Choosing the Right Path at Landis Run Intermediate School (LRIS), Amy Houck and Beth Faehling, $1,500, providing fifth- and sixth-grade students with a sensory pathway in a hallway; Go Venture Business Simulation Software at Manheim Township High School (MTHS), Jerri Guttman and Steve Brenner, $3,195, using simulations to enhance concepts taught in the business department; Google Expeditions: Additional 10 Headsets at Manheim Township Middle School (MTMS), Steven Mellinger, $2,900, allowing entire classes to take virtual journeys together; Inclusive Technology for MDS Classroom at MTHS, Teresa McCully, $2,990.91, providing assistive technology and equipment to students with various disabilities; and Headsprout Early Reading at Brecht Elementary School, Krista Templin, $2,639.25, using phonics-based reading to reinforce concepts outlined in the reading and language arts curriculum.
Also, MT Skylab Observatory Phase 2 at MTHS, David Farina, $37,150.15, a long-term project providing a home for astronomy observation and discussion for students in kindergarten through 12th grade, staff members, and the community; One School One Book at Bucher Elementary, Cristiana Means and Jessica Siedman, $2,380, providing copies of the same book to all members of the student body; Read Naturally Live for All at Neff Elementary School, Rachel Welsh, $4,655, addressing reading fluency for students who are in learning support, emotional support, autistic support, and life skills classrooms and others; Reading and Writing for a Lifetime at MTMS, Andrea Adams and Ashley Gill, $2,630, showing students in seventh-grade English language arts classes the connection between writing skills and elements of stories and hosting author Margaret Peterson Haddix; and School Climate Change Through FOR Clubs at MTMS, Nicole Ellis and team, $10,971, starting FOR (Friends of Rachel) clubs at the middle school to enhance a positive school climate.
Additionally, SOS Signs of Suicide Prevention Program at MTHS, Annie Cappelli, $945, improving student knowledge and adaptive attitudes about suicide risk and depression, as well as reducing suicide attempts; Sphero Bolt Power Pack at MTHS, Karen Leisey, $2,499.99, providing tennis-ball-size robots that are programmed using a range of apps and can help complete experiments; Sprouting Learners at Reidenbaugh and Brecht elementary schools, Barbara Kurtz and Tess Wales, $1,500, providing parent-child workshops intended to help prepare students for school; James L. and Jane L. Wertz Memorial Scholarship at MTHS, $200; and Sally Hawthorne Art Education Scholarship at MTHS, $1,000.
