The North Museum of Nature and Science is opening its doors to children whose schools offer only half-day classes or are entirely virtual. With a tagline of "Cooler Than School," School @ North Museum (SNM), the museum's on-site facilitated tele-learning program, will serve students in kindergarten through grade eight. The North Museum will welcome students to its designated classroom space on Monday, Sept. 14.
Certified teachers and highly educated facilitators will aid student learning as children attend virtual classes provided by their own schools. Parents will attend a virtual meeting with a member of their child's educational team prior to their start date, resulting in a customized individual learning plan for each student. Parents will also receive daily updates on their child's learning activities and progress. With teacher-to-student ratios estimated to be two educators/facilitators to every five to seven students, the program is intended to serve all children, especially those who struggle to learn virtually and those whose parents are facing critical education and child care needs as schools close their doors.
Blending the museum's expertise in informal and experiential learning with a facilitated virtual classroom experience, SNM offers a co-op or camp-like feel, bringing together virtual school and science-based, in-person learning with no-tech, low-tech, and tech options. Students will have opportunities to participate in STEAM career exploratory programs, Lego League, Ask a Scientist programming and more.
SNM also offers children opportunities to socialize in a healthy and safe environment during the pandemic. CDC protocols are already in place at the museum, meaning masks are mandatory, and social distancing measures will continue to be enforced, along with temperature taking at the entrance and other protocols.
SNM is built for all parents - parents who go to work, parents who work from home or in the home, and parents who homeschool their children.
Half-day and full-day sessions are available. Parents can pick two to three days or a full week and even sign up for the entire fall semester. SNM also offers early drop-off and after-school programming.
More information can be found at http://www.northmuseum.org or by emailing school@northmuseum.org. A waitlist is already in place, and space is limited. Parents are encouraged to contact the museum as soon as possible to reserve their child's space.
