OneRunTogether's "Ready, Set, Glow!" 5K Run/Walk will be held on Saturday, July 20, beginning at 9 p.m. at the Honeybrook Golf Club, 1422 Cambridge Road, Honey Brook. During the first-time event, participants will be able to run or walk on the golf course's cart path, which will be illuminated with lanterns. Each participant will receive a glow necklace or bracelet.
All 5K participants will be timed and eligible to place in their age group. The awards ceremony will begin at 10 p.m. Live music by Exit Strategy will also be featured at the start and finish of the event.
There will be separate registration fees for adults and children ages 5 to 12. Children age 12 and younger must be accompanied by an adult.
All proceeds from the event will benefit OneRunTogether (ORT), a nonprofit organzation that financially and spiritually supports local cancer patients in need. The charity was started by Vern Murphy, who lost his wife, Beth, to breast cancer in 2009. The charity's motto is "OneRunTogether - so no one fights cancer alone."
Those interested in seeking financial support from the organization while undergoing treatment may complete an application at http://www.oneruntogether.org by clicking on Patient Grant Application. ORT's board of directors reviews all applications, which must be signed and submitted by an oncologist or a certified professional. After an application is approved, bills are submitted for direct payment.
Murphy personally delivers the grant money to patients throughout Berks and Chester counties, and he spends time with each of the cancer patients. He also presents them with a Bible.
Since 2011, more than 300 grants have been given to help patients with rent, mortgage payments, utility bills and medical costs.
In addition to the upcoming Glow Run 5K, registration is open for the eighth annual Hard to the Core 5K Mud Run. The event will take place on Saturday, Sept. 7, at Weaver's Orchard in Morgantown. During the event, participants will run through apple and peach trees, a vineyard, a Christmas tree farm, mud holes, hay bale obstacles and more. The course will end at the pond with live music and an apple pancake breakfast.
