The Hummelstown Area Historical Society will hold an open house on Sunday, April 11, from 1 to 4 p.m. The society will also hold its monthly general meeting on Monday, April 19, at 7 p.m. Both events will take place at the 1815 Parish House, located at the Corner of Rosanna Street and North Alley in Hummelstown.
The 1815 Parish House has been the home of the historical society for 50 Years. Last renovated in 1855, the historical site has served as a museum, community meeting site, and sanctuary.
During the open house, a pew dedication ceremony will begin at 2 p.m. in the sanctuary, hosted by the Rev. Curtis Weber and Jean Seibert. Memorial pews for some of the historical society's volunteers will be dedicated.
Dan Stokes, organist at the Zion Lutheran Church, will present selections on the organ from the former Hanover Street Methodist Church.
Additionally, visitors may tour the renovated meeting room and exhibit hall, view refreshed displays of the society's Collection of Artifacts on the second and third floors, and study Chad Lister's "Educational History in Hummelstown." Attendees may learn about the Hartwell Family Native American Artifact Collection based on the new research by Bryce Foster and visit the Hummel Cemetery, which includes gravesites of the Hummel family and 27 Revolutionary War soldiers.
The book "The Hummelstown Anthology" will be available for purchase for the first time at the open house. The new publication was compiled by Wade Seibert and printed by Picture Perfect Productions.
The book features 20 historical speeches and articles to celebrate the historical society's 50th year. Proceeds of the book go toward expenses related to the society's 50th anniversary celebrations scheduled throughout the year.
The general meeting on April 19 will include a presentation by Terry Neumyer titled "The Civil War." Masks are required, and seating is limited because of social distancing policies. A simultaneous video conference presentation on Zoom will occur.
To make reservations to attend in person or for the access information for Zoom, call the historical society office at 717-566-6314. Those seeking access details for the virtual presentation should leave a message with their name and phone number.
