The opera "Miss Havisham's Wedding Night" will be performed at St. John's United Church of Christ, 161 N. Main St., Red Lion, on Friday and Saturday, July 19 and 20, at 8 p.m. Tickets will be available at the door only.
The opera is produced and directed by college student Caroline Wolfe, who is also a member of the cast. The opera is a monodrama based on the character Miss Havisham from Charles Dickens' novel "Great Expectations." The opera lasts only 30 minutes and is sung entirely in English.
Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Dominick Argento is a native of York County and a graduate of York High. He went on to study at the Peabody Institute and the Eastman School of Music before launching into an international music career as a composer. Argento passed away in February at age 91, leaving behind family in York. This opera is performed in memorial to Argento with permission from his family.
Following each performance, there will be an informational talkback. Friday night's discussion, "Welcome to Satis House," focuses on Dickens and "Great Expectations." Saturday's "Claim to Fame" will provide more information about Argento.
