Orchestra, Mandolin Duo Will Perform

Apr 26, 2019 - 7:30 pm

The Arts at Millersville University and the Tell School of Music will present a concert on Friday, April 26, at 7:30 p.m. "Orchestral Masterworks" will feature students of the Millersville University orchestra with the Philadelphia-based mandolin duo Alexandrov-Skliar Duo. Led by maestra Vera Volchansky, the orchestra will perform music of Vivaldi, Bach, and Mussorgsky, as well as selections from Russian folk music, in Steinman Hall at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster.

The duo includes Alexey Alexandrov on domra and Ekaterina Skliar on mandolin. Alexandrov and Skliar came together in 2015 to form a duo whose repertoire spans from Bach duets to folk and jazz music. They arrange baroque and classical masterpieces, along with jazz and ethnic themes, for their instrumentation, bringing together the traditions of classical music and Russian folk origins.

The duo has performed concerts in numerous American and Russian cities.

The duo has become a nominee for the "MIRA" World Music Award (Russia) and a winner in the category Best Instrumental Project of the International Music Festival Ustuu-Huree in Russia. They are prizewinners of national, international, and All-Russian competitions and music festivals, including International Gold Iria ethno-music competition, All-Russian competition "Young Talents of Russia," International Music Competition of Folk Instrument Performers, and others. They have collaborated with many artists including violinist Vadim Repin, Gypsy folk song string ensembles Lendvay and Friends, Oliver Lake, Kevin Mahogany, and Alain Musichini.

Volchansky serves as orchestra director with the Millersville University orchestra. She has worked with orchestras and various instrumental and choral ensembles in the United States as well as Europe and Russia. Most recently, Volchansky led four staged performances of "Lucia di Lammermoor" with Vocal Productions NYC.
