"Returning: An Earth Art Installation," a labyrinth and meditative space in nature, has been created at Kauffman Orchards, located at 58 S. Harvest Road, Bird-in-Hand.
"Returning" is a unique outdoor art installation built from "retired" apple trees, cherry trees and peach prunings, and it includes a Chartres-style labyrinth spanning 100 feet across. "Returning" invites viewers to honor and enjoy nature by engaging with various contemplative spaces within the exhibit.
The exhibit will be open to the public through the end of October during orchard U-pick hours. After the harvest season in the orchard, there will be a closing celebration on Saturday, Oct. 29, at 3 p.m. and the sculptures will be burned.
This exhibit is a collaboration between artist Rhonda Hershey Ike and Kauffman's orchard manager Clair Kauffman. The project was born from Ike's vision of honoring the uprooted apple trees and Kauffman's intention of creating a prayer labyrinth on the open field.
Private appointments and guided labyrinth walks in the evenings are also being planned, as well as some special events that will be offered through Eventbrite. For more information, call 717-768-7112 or visit http://www.kauffman.farm.
