Outdoor Park Programs Set

Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation will offer programs to the community. Unless otherwise noted, there is a per-person fee for the programs, and activities will take place at the Environmental Center in Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature's Way, Lancaster. Additionally, unless noted otherwise, registration and payment are required by noon on the business day before the event. Thursday in the Park: Fall Leaves will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 22, for children ages 6 to 9. The program will focus on trees with leaves and the changes that occur.

Camouflage and Coats, a program for children ages 8 to 12, will be offered from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 24. The program will teach children the basics of different types of camouflage that animals use to hide. The program will end with hiding activities, such as hide and seek and capture the flag.

Squish and Scrape the Spotted Lanternfly will be held for all ages on Oct. 24 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Participants will hike with a naturalist to look for and squish or scrape the lanternfly and its egg masses.

A Family Scavenger Hunt will take place from 3 to 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 24 and from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Nov. 7. Open to people of all ages, the family scavenger hunt will start with a brief lesson on GPS handheld units and how to use them to find scavenger hunt points. Participants will use GPS units to find a variety of points where they will collect listed scavenger hunt items.

A Fall Central Park Hike, for people age 6 and older, will take place on Sunday, Oct. 25, from 3 to 5 p.m. Hikers will depart from the exhibit farmhouse and should bring water, dress for the weather, and wear shoes for hiking about 5 miles on rough and/or wet terrain.

Skeleton and Skull Surprises, for people of all ages, will take place on Thursday, Oct. 29, with sessions available from 10 to 11 a.m. and 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Participants will examine skulls and skeletal remains of wild animals.

A Blue Moon Hike will be offered for people of all ages on Saturday, Oct. 31, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Participants will listen to the sounds of the night and observe the fields and woods by the light of the blue moon, or the second full moon in a month.

Homeschool Wednesday: Outdoor Challenge, for youths ages 8 to 12, has been set for Wednesday, Nov. 4, with sessions from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 2:30 p.m. Students will work in small groups to complete a fun challenge course. Children under age 8 are welcome if accompanying older siblings.
