Outdoor Programs Offered At Welkinweir

Green Valleys Watershed Association (GVWA) is offering a drop-off program at Welkinweir this fall where students will explore and play while learning about how to be stewards of natural resources. Welkinweir consists of 224 acres of protected land and waterways.

The following programs will be offered for students of different grade levels. Students may be registered for as many dates as they wish.

"Outdoor Adventurers" for students in fourth and fifth grades will be held on Thursdays, Oct. 22 and Nov. 5 and 12, from 3:45 to 5:45 p.m. Adventures will include a pond study and meadow walk to learn about life and food webs in these habitats, hikes to observe and learn about bird species in the community, and activities to learn about edible and medicinal plants. Following each exploration, students will journal about their discoveries.

"Outdoor Explorers" for students in first, second and third grades will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 3, from 9 a.m. to noon and on Monday, Nov. 23, from 2 to 5 p.m. Using scavenger hunts, binoculars, magnifiers and other discovery activities and tools, students will investigate various habitats. Each session will conclude with journaling.

Fees per child, per day apply, and a 5% discount will be given for siblings registering for the same program. Journals and all learning materials will be provided; all programs will be held outdoors and in the covered pavilion.

Face coverings are required, and children will have breaks from wearing masks during different activities.

Spaces are limited, and registration is required at least two days prior to each program. Readers may contact dwhite@greenvalleys.org or 610-469-8646 to register.

GVWA and Welkinweir are located at 1368 Prizer Road, Pottstown, in East Nantmeal Township.
