Park Programs Slated

Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation will offer programs to the community. Unless otherwise noted, there is a per-person fee for the programs, and activities will take place at the Environmental Center in Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature's Way, Lancaster. Additionally, registration and payment are required by noon on the business day before the event. Introduction to Orienteering will be open to people of all ages on Saturday, April 24, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Garden of Five Senses patio. A naturalist will instruct in the basics of the activity and provide a practice control before participants attempt courses. For participants in the fall 2020 HS Wednesdays classes looking for a challenge, longer orienteering courses will also be available. Attendees should dress for the weather and for covering a couple miles on a mixture of woodland trails and floodplains.

In the Riffle Stream Study will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 25, at the Theodore A. Parker Natural Area. Participants, who must be age 8 or older, will learn about species that live in fast flowing riffles and what makes them unique. Participants will find and identify insects, fish, and other critters that call these areas home. Closed-toe shoes are required.

Wildflowers in Your Own Yard will be offered to people of all ages on April 25 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. and again on Friday, April 30, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Participants will learn about the wildflowers in their own yard.

Buds and Blooms will be offered from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the parking lot at Pavilion 21, 823 Kiwanis Drive, Lancaster, on Monday, April 26, and Sunday, May 2. Participants of all ages will join a naturalist in the woods to learn about the flowers at their feet and the ones in the trees.

Full Pink Supermoon will take place from 8 to 9 p.m. on April 26 at the parking lot at Muhlenberg Meadow, 548 Golf Road, Lancaster. Participants of all ages will join a naturalist for a walk through the woods along the creek and in the native wildflower meadow. Attendees will look at and listen to the wonders of nature as the full moon shows the way.

Munchkin Science: Sun Catchers will be held for children ages 3 to 5 from 10 to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 27. Participants will make a nature sun catcher constructed with a clear contact paper window showcasing special treasures. Young scientists will collect some of the treasures and decorate the round frames with their own touches. A naturalist will share facts about the chosen plants.

Tweens and Teens: Fishing at Strasburg Pond, set for Thursday, April 29, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., will offer youths ages 11 to 15 an evening of catch-and-release fishing at Strasburg Borough Pond, located off South Jackson Street in Strasburg. Attendees should enter the site by way of the lane before the pool at 143 S. Jackson St. Participants should be dropped off for the program, but parents must sign children in and leave emergency contact information.
