Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation will offer programs to the community. Unless otherwise noted, there is a per-person fee for the programs, and activities will take place at the Environmental Center in Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature's Way, Lancaster. Skeleton and Skull Surprises, for people of all ages, will take place on Thursday, Oct. 29, with sessions available from 10 to 11 a.m. and 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Participants will examine skulls and skeletal remains of wild animals.
A Blue Moon Hike will be offered for people of all ages on Saturday, Oct. 31, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Participants will listen to the sounds of the night and observe the fields and woods by the light of the blue moon, or the second full moon in a month.
Homeschool Wednesday: Outdoor Challenge, for youths ages 8 to 12, has been set for Wednesday, Nov. 4, with sessions from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 2:30 p.m. Students will work in small groups to complete a fun challenge course. Children under age 8 are welcome if accompanying older siblings.
Thursday in the Park: Local Rocks and Minerals will be open to children ages 6 to 9 on Thursday, Nov. 5, from 1 to 2 p.m. Participants will examine local rocks and discover some of the minerals within them. Participants should dress for the weather. Children under age 6 are welcome if accompanying older siblings.
People of all ages may participate in a Family Scavenger Hunt on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 10:30 a.m. to noon. This activity will start with a brief lesson on GPS handheld units and how to use them to find scavenger hunt points. Participants will use GPS units to find a variety of points where they will collect listed scavenger hunt items.
Hike at Speedwell Forge, for people age 5 and up, will take place on Nov. 7 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at Speedwell Forge County Park. Attendees will meet at the trailhead parking lot at 480 Speedwell Forge Road, Lititz. This park has a loop trail through unique bottomland along Hammer Creek and a second loop through mature hardwood forest. A naturalist will point out natural history highlights along the trail.
