Parks Department Posts Activities

Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation will offer programs to the community. Unless otherwise noted, there is a per-person fee for the programs, and activities will take place at the Environmental Center in Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature's Way, Lancaster. Additionally, unless noted otherwise, registration and payment are required by noon on the business day before the event. Friday Forays, for people age 8 and up, will take place on Friday, March 19, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Participants should meet at the Muhlenberg parking lot, 548 Golf Road, Lancaster, to take a guided walk. Participants should dress for the weather and plan to walk a couple miles on mowed but uneven terrain.

Toadstool Trek, for people age 6 and up, will be offered on Saturday, March 20, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Attendees will look for and learn about fungi.

Survival Skills and Shelter Building, for people age 5 and up, has been set for March 20 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Participants will learn information for building a functional survival shelter and then work together to build their own.

Build a Bluebird Box, for people of all ages, will take place on Sunday, March 21, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. in Pavilion 11. Attendees will learn about cavity nesting birds that may want to live in a bluebird box. Participants should bring a hammer as they will also build their own box.

Thursday in the Park: Signs of Spring, for 6- to 9-year-olds, has been set for Thursday, March 25, from 10 to 11 a.m. or 1 to 2 p.m. As part of the series, children will begin simple weather observations and chart them weekly to note changes as spring progresses. Participants should dress for the weather and plan for outdoor activity. Children under age 6 are welcome if accompanying older siblings.

Tweens and Teens: GPS Scavenger Hunt, for people age 11 and up, will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on March 25. Participants will learn how to use handheld GPS units before using them to collect scavenger hunt items. The team that collects all items the fastest will be rewarded with a small prize. Participants may be dropped off for the program, but parents must sign children in and leave emergency contact information.
