Parks Department Posts Programs

The York County Department of Parks and Recreation will offer several upcoming programs. Unless otherwise noted, admission will be free, though registration is required. A drop-in program about caterpillars will take place on Sunday, Aug. 11, from 2 to 4 p.m. Families may drop in at any time during the program and stay for as long as they like. Deb Carman, Penn State Master Gardener and butterfly educator, will lead the program. Participants will meet live caterpillars, learn about the caterpillars' habits and required habitats, and learn which native plants attract beneficial insects, including butterflies.

On Sunday, Aug. 18, from 2:30 to 4 p.m., Kirk Dreier from Baltimore County Parks will present a hands-on demonstration of the ancient art of making tools from rock. Participants will have the opportunity to practice with stone axes, throwing sticks, bow and arrows, and atlatl.

On Sunday, Aug. 25, from 2:30 to 4 p.m., attendees will walk around the park to learn what native plants are edible and which should be avoided. Horn Farm education director Jon Darby will lead.
