Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation will offer programs to the community. Unless otherwise noted, there is a per-person fee for the programs, and activities will take place at the Environmental Center in Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature's Way, Lancaster. A Full Moon Owl Hike for people of all ages will be offered on Thursday, Dec. 12, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. A naturalist will share information before participants embark on the hike, during which they will look and listen for owls.
Winter Treats for Backyard Birds for people of all ages will be held on Saturday, Dec. 14, from 10 to 11 a.m. Participants will make a variety of wild bird foods, including dried fruit and cranberry garlands and wreaths, orange cups, and suet balls. Attendees should dress for a messy project that includes nuts, fruits, seeds, peanuts, and peanut butter.
Kids' Outdoor Expedition and Ornament Crafting, a program for children ages 2 to 10, will run from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Dec. 14. The program will allow children to learn about the beauty of nature in winter while crafting ornaments for a tree at home. The program will begin with a hike around the Environmental Center to collect materials needed for the ornaments, such as fallen pinecones and sticks. After collecting items, participants will head back to the classroom to create their ornaments.
Reptile Lady: All About Lizards will take place on Sunday, Dec. 15, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. The program is open to children age 3 and older. Participants will examine live lizards as they study the reptile's basic biology and unique features.
Spot, Squish, Scrape the Spotted Lanternfly, a free program, will be available to people of all ages on Monday, Dec. 16, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. A naturalist will share information about the spotted lanternfly. Attendees will examine the life cycle of this non-native invasive pest so they will know how to spot it and what they can do to help eliminate it from their property and other places. The program is a free public service program.
Homeschool Wednesday: Preparing for Winter will be offered from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 18. The program is open to homeschooled children ages 8 to 12. Students will discover how their mammalian neighbors in the woods and fields prepare for winter. Students should dress for indoor and outdoor activities.
