Parks Department Sets Programs

Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation will offer programs to the community. Unless otherwise noted, there is a per-person fee, and registration and payment are required by noon on the business day before the event. Jump Into STEM - Counting in the Creek, geared for children ages 3 to 5, will be held on Thursday, Sept. 9, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Environmental Center, 1 Nature's Way, Lancaster, in Lancaster County Central Park. Children will collect critters from the Mill Creek using provided nets and basins. Everyone entering the Mill Creek must wear close-toed shoes like old sneakers, and no foam clogs, flip-flops, or sandals are allowed.

Thursday in the Park: Plants and Pollinators will be held on Sept. 9 from 1 to 2 p.m. Children may explore a variety of topics at the Muhlenberg Wildflower Meadow. Participants will meet at the meadow parking lot, 548 Golf Road, Lancaster. Attendees should dress for exploring the meadows. This class is geared for ages 6 through 9, although children under age 6 are welcome if accompanying older siblings.

Brownie WOW Journey: Love and Save Water will take place on Saturday, Sept. 11, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at the Environmental Center. Brownie Girl Scouts age 6 and up will share special waters, create a water map, hold a tea party, play games and develop ideas for saving water at home. Brownies may complete their WOW Journey in two meetings - Sept. 11 and Saturday, Oct. 2 - but they must register for these dates separately. Each girl should dress for indoor and outdoor activities, including painting, and bring a jar of water from a special place. Signed liability waivers are needed to participate in the tea party. Registration is due by noon on Sept. 9.

Paddle in the Park will be available to people age 4 and up on Sept. 11. People may sign up for one or more one-hour time slots beginning at 10 a.m., 11:15 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Participants will learn basic paddling strokes, receive safety instructions on land and then practice their skills in a flat-water area of the Conestoga River. Participants should meet at 877 Rockford Road, the intersection of Rockford Road and General Hand Lane, in Central Park.

Children age 5 and up may participate in Sensational Senses on Sunday, Sept. 12, from 1 to 2 p.m. Attendees will play games and go on a short sensory hike. They should meet at the patio located above the Garden of Five Senses at 38 Pontz Drive, Lancaster.

Munchkin Science: Frogs and Toads, geared for children ages 3 to 5, will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 14, from 1 to 2 p.m. at Climbers Run Nature Preserve, 226 Frogtown Road, Pequea. Children will learn about the life cycle of amphibians, hold tadpoles and search for frogs around the pond.

Tweens and Teens: Shenk's Ferry Hike and Creek Walk, geared for those ages 11 to 17, will be offered on Thursday, Sept. 16, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Shenk's Ferry Wildflower Preserve. Participants should meet in the parking lot at 857 Green Hill Road South, Conestoga. They will hike the trail through the Conservancy and then hike in Grub Run for the return trip. Parents may drop off children, but must first sign a release waiver.
