Parks Department Sets Programs

Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation will offer several programs to the community. Unless otherwise noted, all programs will take place at the Environmental Center in Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature's Way, Lancaster. A walk featuring late summer wildflowers will take place on Friday, Aug. 30, from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Exhibit Farmhouse, 2 Exhibit Farm Drive, Lancaster. The program is for children age 6 and up. In late summer, the Muhlenberg Wildflower Meadow features sunflowers, Joe-Pye weeds, ironweeds, and early goldenrods, as well as birds and butterflies. Naturalist Mary Ann Schlegel will lead the walk.

Everyday Essentials for children age 10 and up will be offered on Saturday, Aug. 31, from 1 to 2 p.m. Participants will make lava bead bracelets, enjoy the scents of essential oils, and make a take-home gift. Naturalist Rachel Albright will lead the program.

Munchkin Science: Stream Play for children ages 3 to 5 will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 3, from 1 to 2 p.m. With naturalist Ann Strauss, children will wade in the creek with nets and collection tubs to discover what is in the stream. There is a fee per child, with a lower fee per adult.

Fall Leaf Print T-shirts for people of all ages will take place on Thursday, Sept. 5, from 10:30 a.m. to noon and from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Attendees will make leaf print T-shirts. Leaves and paints will be provided. Participants should wear old clothes and bring a washed T-shirt or anything else on which they wish to print.

Paddle in the Park for children age 4 and up will be offered on Saturday, Sept. 7, from 10 to 11 a.m., from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., and from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Participants will try their hand at paddling a canoe. They may register for one or more of the hourly time slots to learn basic paddling strokes. Attendees will learn techniques and safety instructions on land. Once in the canoe, they will practice their skills in the water. The group will meet at 877 Rockford Road, located at the intersection of Rockford and Williamson roads.

Fall Micro-Gardening for people of all ages will take place on Sunday, Sept. 8, from 1 to 2 p.m. This program is designed for those wanting to create a starter garden of their favorite herbs or vegetables. Participants will create micro-gardens using recycled materials to begin the process of a garden.

Homeschool Wednesday: Mill Creek Macros will be offered on Wednesday, Sept. 11, from 10 to 11 a.m. Homeschool science classes will continue on Wednesday mornings with programs geared for students ages 8 through 12. Students will explore and quantify Mill Creek macroinvertebrate life. Participants should dress for the weather, and closed-toed shoes are required.
