Parks Department Sets Schedule

Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation will offer programs to the community. Unless otherwise noted, there is a per-person fee for the programs, and activities will take place at the Environmental Center in Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature's Way, Lancaster. Additionally, unless noted otherwise, registration and payment are required by noon on the business day before the event. The community is invited to join a park naturalist for maple sugaring demonstrations on Saturday, Feb. 27; Sunday, Feb. 28; and Sunday, March 7. The free program will take place at pavilion 11 and is open to people of all ages. Multiple time slots are available on each day. During the 45-minute time slots, visitors will learn about and see the process of making maple syrup. Maple products will be available to purchase. Private programs on days other than those listed are also available for a nominal fee.

A Shed Hunt for people of all ages will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Monday, March 1. Participants will join a naturalist to look for antlers that have fallen off the deer and onto the ground. This program will include details about Pennsylvania's state mammal, the white-tailed deer, and how to train one's eyes to look for the antlers.

Munchkin Science: Maple Sugaring, a program for children ages 3 to 5, will be offered at pavilion 11 from 10 to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 2. The program will follow the process used to produce maple syrup, starting with collecting sap.

Homeschool Wednesday: Maple Sugaring will take place on Wednesday, March 3. Two sessions will be available to students ages 8 to 12 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. or from 1 to 2:30 p.m. The program will include identifying sugar maple trees, measuring and tapping trees, collecting sap, and boiling sap to syrup. Younger siblings are welcome but must be registered.

Deep Forest Bathing, for people age 10 and up, will be held on Saturday, March 6, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Theodore A. Parker Natural Area, 244 Wesley Road, Quarryville. The event will feature guided deep listening meditation and mindful walking instruction through the forest.
