Parks Department Sets Schedule

Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation will offer programs to the community. All activities will take place at the Environmental Center in Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature's Way, Lancaster, unless stated otherwise. There is a per-person fee for the programs. Homeschool Wednesday: Evergreens will be offered from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 23. The program is designed for homeschoolers ages 8 to 12. Participants will learn about common local coniferous trees and other evergreen plants. Students should dress appropriately for this outdoor program.

A SuperNATURAL Celebration for people of all ages will be held from 6 to 7:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 25. A naturalist will share the history of Halloween, how other cultures celebrate the season, and information about some not-so-creepy critters. The program will include refreshments and a night hike.

Nature Exploration and Pumpkin Creation will take place from 1 to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26, and it is open to participants age 4 and older. Participants will create their own no-carve pumpkin using materials found in nature and go on a nature scavenger hunt on trails, looking for items such as pinecones, leaves, and twigs.

Campfire with Wildlife and History at the Vesta, a program for people of all ages, will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 26 at Musselman-Vesta Iron Furnace Center, 26 Furnace Road, Marietta. Attendees will learn about and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature. Tours of the Vesta building will be available. Attendees should bring a chair and a flashlight.

A Speedwell Forge Autumn Hike will be offered on Sunday, Oct. 27, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Speedwell Forge County Park, 480 Speedwell Forge Road, Lititz. A naturalist will lead a hike to enjoy the fall foliage in wetlands and woodlands. Participants should dress appropriately for the weather and terrain. The program is open to people age 6 and older.

Munchkin Science: Bats, a program for children ages 3 to 5, will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 29. Children will learn facts about bats and why they are a symbol of Halloween. Attendees will read a book and make a bat craft to take home.

Fall Birds, for people age 16 and up, will take place on Saturday, Nov. 2, from 2 to 4 p.m. A naturalist will lead a walk with a focus on the birds of the forest and the field. Experienced birders and those just getting started are welcome. Those who wish to borrow binoculars should indicate the number they need when they register.

Nature Journal and Discovery, for children age 4 and up who enjoy creating art and exploring nature, will take place on Sunday, Nov. 3, from noon to 1:30 p.m. A naturalist will help children create and decorate their own nature journals, and the group will go exploring on the Central Park trails.

Homeschool Wednesday: Carnivores, for youths ages 8 to 12, has been set for Wednesday, Nov. 6, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. The late-fall homeschool classes will focus on mammals, and a naturalist will introduce mammals in general before engaging students in a study of local carnivores. Attendees should dress for indoor and outdoor activity.
