Parks Department Slates Programs

The York County Department of Parks and Recreation is sponsoring two upcoming programs. For more information on either, readers may visit http://www.yorkcountyparks.org.

A birthday celebration for Abraham Lincoln will be held on Saturday, Feb. 8, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Hanover Junction Train Station Museum, 2433 Seven Valleys Road, Seven Valleys. The Friends of the Heritage Rail Trail Corridor will lead the celebration of Lincoln's 211th birthday. The event will include a re-enactor and birthday cake. There is no fee, and no registration is required.

The parks department will hold a bluebird box workshop and painting session at Nixon County Park Nature Center on Nixon Drive on Sunday, Feb. 9, from 1 to 3 p.m. A park naturalist will introduce cavity nesters, the importance of nesting cavities to local habitat, and the behavior of Eastern bluebirds. After the 45-minute presentation, participants will construct a bluebird box to take home. This activity is designed for children age 8 and up with parents or caregivers. Attendees may stay after to paint their bluebird box, with paint available until 4 p.m. A fee has been set per box, with a limit of two boxes per family.
