Parks Department Slates Programs

The York County Department of Parks and Recreation is sponsoring several upcoming programs. Unless otherwise noted, admission will be free, though registration is required. For more information or to register, readers may call 717-428-1961 or visit http://www.yorkcountyparks.org.

A stream study appropriate for people age 7 and up will be held at Nixon Park on Sunday, July 21, from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Park naturalist Kelsey Frey will lead an investigation of rarely seen stream animals. At this hands-on, feet-wet program, no open-toe shoes or bare feet will be permitted, with old sneakers, water shoes or rain boots recommended. All children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

On Wednesday, July 24, a Porch Talk suitable for people age 14 and up will be offered from 7 to 8 p.m. at the New Freedom Train Station. Local historian and author Ron Hershner will use 23 letters written in 1893 to provide insight into the Civil War home front in York County. The museum will also be open from 6 to 8 p.m. Attendees are asked to bring a blanket or chair to sit on, and no registration is required.

A drop-in program suitable for people age 8 and up will be held on Sunday, July 28, from 1 to 3 p.m. at William Kain County Park. Attendees are asked to meet in the Iron Stone Hill parking lot. Park naturalist Andrew Wolfgang will help participants look through binoculars and spotting scopes for herons, egrets, ducks and maybe a kingfisher. Participants will learn why these birds love hanging out in the shallow waters near the boardwalk. No registration is required.
