Cub Scout Pack 148 of New Holland held its annual Pinewood Derby race on Jan. 30. Due to the pandemic, changes were made to keep Scouts and others safe. Scouts were accompanied only by immediate family members and enjoyed a socially distanced breakfast. Google Meet and Facebook Live videos were shared with family and friends who wanted to experience the event with the Cub Scouts.
While completing preparations for the upcoming race, the Cub Scouts became aware that local schools needed winter items to help keep students warm. They initiated a "Share the Warmth" donation event, which included creating an Amazon Wish List and collecting items from friends and family members. The pack collected over 100 pairs of gloves and mittens and 10 pairs of snow boots, along with multiple hats and blankets.
The winners of the 2021 Pinewood Derby race are Kurtis Hartranft, first place; John Goshert, second place; and Howard Edwards, third place. The Slow Poke award was presented to Castiel Valotta and Best of Show to Owen Martin.
