Polar Bear 5K Event Held

The Sierra Club - Lancaster Group held its 10th anniversary Polar Bear 5K Trail Run/Hike on Jan. 18 at Lancaster County Central Park.

Steven Schousen of Lancaster was the overall winner of the event, finishing the race in 17 minutes, 29 seconds. Two other Lancaster residents were the second- and third-place winners. They are Peter Weida with a time of 18:10 and 15-year-old Lachlan McLane with 18:21.

Finishing in first place among the women racing was Julie Halteman of Lancaster in 21:30. The second-place winner was Laura Brenner of Lancaster in 22:47, with Bonnie Stoeckl of Pequea finishing third in 25:32.

Nearly 60 dogs of various sizes and breeds also participated with their owners. The dog placements were as follows: Cooper, owned by Halteman, first place; Seegie, owned by Korey Schload of Marietta, second place; and Sadie, owned by Mike Helbein of Glenmoore, third place.

A total of 285 people registered for the race, including runners and hikers. Approximately 90 volunteers helped with race-day activities, as well as many spectators who cheered as the participants crossed the finish line.

Proceeds will support the Sierra Club - Lancaster Group's green project grant program that has awarded grants of up to $500 to 44 Lancaster County organizations over the past four years, as well as support its continuing free-to-the-public outdoor activities and educational programs.
