Presentation To Focus On Mills

The Millersville Area Historical Society (MAHS) invites the public to a presentation on the historic water-powered mills of Lancaster County when it meets at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 8, in Millersville's Municipal Center, 100 Municipal Drive.

The speakers, both Lancaster residents, will be Donald Kautz, a professional web developer, the writer of the Mill Monday online posts, and author of "The Conestoga River: A History," and Benton G. Webber, president of the Manheim Township Historical Society and a municipal engineer who has been active in local engineering circles for more than 30 years.

Titled "The Mills Are Alive," the talk will be illustrated with slides. Kautz will present an overview of Lancaster County water-powered mills and their impact on the local economy, road networks, and water courses, including the Conestoga River. He will also provide a few vignettes about county mills. Webber will discuss more deeply the impact of the mills on the waterways and the efforts being made to restore them to their original states. A question-and-answer session will close the presentation.

Copies of "The Conestoga River: A History," which was released in March 2021, will be available at the meeting.

Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and lock at 9:15 a.m. MAHS asks that masks be worn by all attendees.

Admission is free, but donations are welcomed. For more information, contact Phil Gerber at 717-872-8837 before 5 p.m. or at pge8507@aol.com.
