Program To Discuss Tredegar Iron Works

The National Civil War Museum, 1 Lincoln Circle at Reservoir Park, will offer the seventh presentation in the 2019 Lessons in History Speaker Series on Saturday, July 27, from 1 to 2 p.m.

The program, "Manufacturing for Our Masters: Slave Labor, the Tredegar Iron Works, and the Confederate War Effort," will be presented by Dr. Mary DeCredico, United States Naval Academy. When Virginia seceded and joined the newly established Confederate States of America, it brought to the Southern war effort one of the most important and significant war industries: the Tredegar Iron Works. After the 1862 Conscription Act, the Tredegar became even more dependent on slave labor.

DeCredico is professor of history at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, where she has taught since 1986. Her specialty is the Civil War era and the Confederacy. She has been awarded the Department of the Navy's Meritorious Civilian Service Medal twice and the Department of the Navy's Superior Civilian Service Medal twice. She was also chosen as one of 36 individuals to be recognized by the Secretary of the Navy to be profiled in a special exhibit celebrating the Navy and diversity at the Pentagon in 2012. She has authored award-winning books on the American Civil War.

The 2019 Lessons in History program is free to the public. Regular museum admission applies for entrance to the museum galleries.
