The Marietta Community House, 264 W. Market St., will host its 2019 Summer Town Talk, part of the Sunday Afternoon Town Talks series, on Sunday, Aug. 11, at 2:30 p.m. Margaret Hunt Landis will present a slideshow titled "James Duffy: A Man of Mystery and a Millionaire." Following the program, light refreshments will be provided by the board of the Marietta Community House.
Col. James Duffy was a 19th-century millionaire who was born in a log house in Marietta and died in his mansion there. He started his career piloting rafts on the Susquehanna River and amassed his wealth through various pursuits.
Landis was raised with a devotion to historical research, especially exploration of Lancaster County history, following in the footsteps of her grandfather and mother. She passed on to her love of history to her son, James Landis, who is noted for his work on Marietta history.
