Strasburg-Heisler Library, 143 Precision Ave., Strasburg, is participating in the Longwood Garden Community Read, a program designed to encourage reading for pleasure and to start conversations. This year, the journey will continue into the science of the plant world by focusing on seeds.
On Saturday, May 18, at 10 a.m., interested individuals are invited to join Matthew Ross, director of continuing education at Longwood Gardens, as he presents a lecture and hands-on workshop based on the concepts of the Longwood Gardens Community Read 2019 book selection, "The Triumph of Seeds: How Grains, Nuts, Kernels, Pulses, and Pips Conquered the Plant Kingdom and Shaped Human History" by award-winning author Thor Hanson. The wide range of seeds used today will be examined in the interactive program. Topics covered will include the processing and storage of seeds, as well as their use in planting, cooking, and jewelry. A limited number of family passes to Longwood Gardens and several different types of seeds will be given away during the program.
Additionally, Longwood Gardens has provided the library with several copies of "The Triumph of Seeds," which was published in 2015.
"Seedfolks" is the Community Read book for middle-grade readers. Written by Paul Fleischman, "Seedfolks" tells the story of how the simple act of a 9-year-old girl planting lima bean seeds sparks 13 individuals from various ethnic backgrounds, cultures, and age levels to come together to create a community garden.
"The Reason for a Flower" by Ruth Heller is the Community Read book for the youngest readers. In this book about flowers, pollen, and seeds, Heller introduces young readers to parts of plants and their functions in a rhythmic style.
The Strasburg-Heisler Library is open on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Registration for the May 18 event is required, as space is limited. Folks may register at http://www.strasburglibrary.org/events or by calling the library 717-687-8969.
