The Millersville Area Historical Society will host a presentation on food rationing during World War II when it meets at 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 13, in Millersville's Municipal Center, 100 Municipal Drive. The speaker will be Christine "Miss Victory" Lurk, a World War II history buff.
A member of a homefront group called the Victory Society, Lurk will present "Ugh! Food Rationing - How to Survive It in World War II" while dressed in 1940s-era clothing. Lurk will explore issues such as reasons for shortages, essential and scarce commodities, the importance of health to those in the military and on the home front, why the military got "first dibs" on food, war ration books and their stamp systems, the value of victory gardens, and the do's and don'ts of rationing. A question-and-answer session will follow the program.
Born in Baltimore, raised in California, and now a resident of Littlestown, Lurk attended the University of California, Berkeley; served as a U.S. Army MP in Berlin while the Wall was in place; and retired as a corrections officer at the Adams County Adult Correctional Complex.
Admission is free, but donations will be accepted. For more information, readers may call Phil Gerber at 717-872-8837 before 5 p.m. or email pge8507@aol.com.
