Programs Will Spotlight Local History

The African American Heritage Walking Tour will be held on Saturday, Aug. 3, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The tours will depart from the Lancaster City Visitor Center, 38 Penn Square, Lancaster. Participants will learn about Lancaster's abolitionists, Underground Railroad agents, religious leaders, and entrepreneurs on a tour of 14 historic sites in downtown Lancaster. Tickets are available day-of.

"I Carry It About With Me Always: The Letters of Buck & Mary," a living history program at President James Buchanan's Wheatland, will be held on Aug. 3, with tours at 1, 2, and 3 p.m. In this first-person presentation, old college friends James Buchanan "Buck" Henry and Christian Scharff catch up during a holiday at Lake George. Visitors will learn about the tension between Buck and his uncle, President James Buchanan, and how that tension drove him to visit Lake George in the first place. However, in the midst of his respite from the political world, Buck has left his sweetheart, Mary, behind. Visitors will hear the correspondence between Buck and Mary and learn more about their relationship and how letter-writing enabled them to remain close.

Summer Story Time at LancasterHistory will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 7, at 11 a.m. A museum educator will read aloud from a book centered on a historical theme and then lead a craft inspired by the theme. Summer Story Time is open to all children, though it is recommended for those ages 4 through 9. The 2019 summer internship graduation will be held on Thursday, Aug. 8, at 5 p.m. at LancasterHistory. Seven college interns will present on the projects they have completed over the course of the summer under the supervision of LancasterHistory's staff in five museum departments. The project presentations will be followed by a brief graduation ceremony and presentation of awards.

"Creating Habitats for Butterflies," part of the Tanger Arboretum Nature Series, will be held on Saturday, Aug. 24, at 10 a.m. at LancasterHistory. Sponsored by the Friends of the Tanger Arboretum, the program will feature York County Master Gardener Deb Carman explaining how individuals can create habitats for butterflies in all their life stages, how native plants impact butterflies, and how to employ butterfly-friendly gardening techniques. Advance tickets are recommended as at-door tickets are not guaranteed. Tickets may be purchased online or by calling 717-392-4633. Separate fees have been set for adults age 18 and up and for children age 17 and under. The program will be free for members of the Friends of the Tanger Arboretum (registration required).

"Go At Your Own Pace" Saturday Tours at Wheatland will be offered on Saturday, Aug. 31, with tour entries every 15 minutes from 1:15 to 3:15 p.m. Guides will be stationed throughout the presidential mansion. The ticket price also includes admission to the museum exhibitions at LancasterHistory.
