Due to ongoing limitations and guidelines for long-term care facilities and in lieu of its annual harvest festival, pig roast and auction, Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community will hold a drive through, curbside pickup pulled pork fundraiser. The fundraiser will be held on Saturday, Oct. 16, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of East Fairview Church of the Brethren, 1187 Fairview Road, Manheim. Each meal will include fire-grilled and slow-roasted pulled pork with sauce, a homemade Amish soft roll, gourmet cheese potatoes, sweet and sour saucy green beans with bacon, applesauce and a dessert.
Proceeds from the meal will benefit Mt. Hope, where director of advancement Kris Wilson said residents experience a warm and inviting atmosphere. "I quickly realized how special Mt. Hope is," she said, of her early impressions when she came on board with the community. "Its size and home-like space naturally lend itself to a family feel."
Despite the challenges faced this year, Mt. Hope received a five-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the highest award given to a facility for the care it provides. Wilson noted that Mt. Hope is committed to providing care for seniors regardless of their ability to pay. The 50-bed facility provides charitable care through government assistance, but a gap exists between what is covered and what eligible residents can afford. Fundraisers such as the pulled-pork meal help fill in that gap. Mt. Hope will also participate in the Extraordinary Give on Friday, Nov. 19.
"Every dollar has the chance to change lives at Mt. Hope," Wilson said.
Meal preorders will be accepted through Friday, Oct. 8, and saved under the name provided when ordered. To place an order, contact Wilson at 717-682-8026 or advancement@mthopenazarene.org. No handling of money will occur on the day of food pickup. Payment may be made in a drop box on site in the form of cash or checks made payable to "Mt. Hope NRC." Extra meals will be available while supplies last.
