Northern Central Railway, 2 W. Main St., New Freedom, has announced plans for its 2020 season.
The railway will reopen on Friday, July 3, for two excursions to Seitzland and back to New Freedom at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Participants are invited to celebrate the inaugural voyage of its new EMD GP9 diesel locomotive and enjoy views along the York County Heritage Rail Trail.
The railway will be closed for Independence Day on Saturday, July 4, and will return to the tracks on Sunday, July 5, at which point it will run two trains each day to Seitzland on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. As railway staff gain experience with the new guidelines and assess demand over the summer months, they will determine when to offer an expanded excursion schedule.
Regular trains will run without entertainers for the time being. Seating will be limited to 50% capacity per coach to facilitate social distancing. Weather permitting, all windows in each coach will be open during runs to allow fresh air to flow. The railway will schedule one hour between each train to allow time for deep cleaning. Staff, volunteers, and passengers will be required to wear a face mask or covering in compliance with Department of Health and CDC guidelines.
