"Newsies" To Play At LBC

Servant Stage, a nonprofit theater serving Lancaster County, will produce "Newsies." The Tony-award winning Disney musical, based on the 1992 motion picture, was inspired by a true story. The show features a score by Alan Menken, dancing, and a focus on the message to fight for what is right. Producers have gathered a cast of more than 40 local performers, working with a 10-piece orchestra, in an energetic and family-friendly show that audience members of all ages may enjoy.

"Newsies" will play at Lancaster Bible College, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster, on Thursdays, June 9 and 16, at 7 p.m.; Fridays, June 3, 10, and 17, at 7 p.m.; Saturdays, June 4, 11, and 18, at 2 and 7 p.m.; and Sundays, June 5, 12, and 19, at 2 p.m.

According to artistic director Wally Calderon, the well-known musical is one that Servant Stage has wanted to undertake for some time. He said that he is enjoying working with the large ensemble cast as they explore the story of New York City's newsboys at the turn of the 20th century.

The cast will also include Lancaster's Dan Deal, known for his work at Sight & Sound Theatre. Director Jonathan Bauer reported that teenagers were cast in the roles of the newsies to preserve the authenticity of the piece.

All performances will be offered as pay-what-you-will, which is part of Servant Stage's mission to make great performances accessible to all members of the community. Reservations are required, and shows have been known to sell out. To reserve tickets, readers may visit http://www.ServantStage.org or call 717-455-0255.
