Recreational Programs Set

The Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation will offer programs to the community. Unless otherwise noted, there is a per-person fee for the programs, most of which will take place at the Environmental Center in Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature's Way, Lancaster. Children under age 3 may attend for free. Registration and payment are required by noon on the business day before the event, unless stated otherwise.

A Wildflower Walk, open to people of all ages, will be offered from 3 to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 9. Participants will meet a naturalist at the Covered Bridge Parking Lot in Central Park, located near 21 Kiwanis Drive, Lancaster, for a walk along the wildflower trail. The program will help walkers learn ways to identify the plants and learn about their value to humans and wildlife.

Nature Play, a program for children ages 1 to 3, will be offered from 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday, May 10, at Pavilion 2, 1055 Rockford Road, Lancaster. A naturalist will lead an exploration of nature through play, including group activities like parachute games, stories, and yoga as well as free-play with natural materials. Parent participation is essential to the success of this program.

S'mores and More for people of all ages will take place at Campsite 3 on May 10 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. All the fixings for s'mores over the campfire will be provided. Attendees will enjoy the fire, share stories, and learn about some creatures of the night.

Story, Craft, and Critter: Bugs will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 11. Participants ages 3 to 12 will learn about insects and other creatures through an interactive story reading, then make a craft celebrating bugs. Children must have an adult helper.

Tot Hike and Take, designed for children ages 18 months to 6 years, will take place from 1 to 2 p.m. at Pavilion 3, 1098 Rockford Road, Lancaster, on May 11. Participants will hike with a naturalist and hunt for natural materials to use to create a one-of-a-kind sculpture to remember the fun.

Babywearing Hike will take place on May 11 from 3 to 4 p.m. at Pavilion 3. The hike will total less than a half-mile on a relatively flat trail. A naturalist will introduce participants to hiking with babies and children, including gear, tips and tricks, and favorite locations for hikes.

Animals and Their Mothers will take place on Sunday, May 12, from 3 to 4 p.m. Participants will learn from a naturalist about some mother-and-child relationships among various animal species.
