Recreational Programs Set

The Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation will offer two programs to the community. There is a per-person fee for the programs, which will take place at the Environmental Center in Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature's Way, Lancaster, unless otherwise noted. Registration and payment are required by noon on the business day before the event.

GPS Tic-Tac-Toe for people of all ages will be held on Friday, July 19, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Participants will receive a tic-tac-toe card with geocaches to locate. Naturalist Mary Ann Schlegel will provide instruction on the use of handheld GPS units prior to searching for geocaches. Attendees are asked to dress for outdoor activity and wear shoes appropriate for covering 1 to 2 miles on varied terrain. Registrants are asked to indicate the number of GPS units required, and they should plan to leave their keys or driver's license if borrowing a unit. Adults must accompany children.

Junior Girl Scout Animal Habitats for girls age 8 and up will take place on Saturday, July 20, from 2 to 4 p.m. Naturalist Ann Strauss will lead Junior Girl Scouts through the requirements for the Animal Habitats Badge. Together they will take a hike and make observations along the way, noting signs of resident wildlife, building nests as habitat, and more. Attendees should be prepared to be outside for most of the program.

Muddy Mess, for people age 4 and up, will take place on Saturday, July 27, from noon to 1 p.m. at Campsite 5, 19 Nature's Way, Lancaster. Led by Naturalist Vanessa Stager, children will collect their own materials for the making of mud pies around the Environmental Center. Before getting messy, participants will become familiar with the ways that animals use mud in their daily lives to help them survive.
