The York County Department of Parks and Recreation will offer recreational programs to the community. The programs will take place at Rocky Ridge County Park, 3699 Deininger Road, York, and registration is required, unless otherwise noted. Broad-Winged Hawkwatch will take place on Saturday, Sept. 21, from 1 to 4 p.m. Participants should park in the Oak Timbers parking lot and meet at the North Overlook. Participants will gather at the hawkwatch platform and learn about migrating fall raptors and practice identifying them in flight. Attendees should bring binoculars, if possible, along with a field guide and lawn chair, and dress for the weather. No registration is required.
A stream study will be held in the Old Mill Stream at Wallace-Cross Mill, 15759 Cross Mill Road, Felton, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 21. Participants will explore beneath the surface in this hands-on program. Participants will get their feet wet and should wear old sneakers, water shoes, or rain boots. All children under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult. In addition, the historic grist mill will be open for tours from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for Miller's Heritage Day.
Family Campout Night will be held on Friday, Sept. 27, at 6:30 p.m. to Saturday, Sept. 28, at 9 a.m. Participants will meet at the Hidden Laurel Picnic Area, Pheasant and Screech Owl pavilion. The entire family is invited to bring a tent and sleeping bags to sleep under the stars on the woods-encircled sports field at Rocky Ridge.
Participants will explore trails, the natural play area, the fitness path, and more. The event will offer a twilight wildlife hike, a campfire for roasting hot dogs and marshmallows, and an optional light breakfast. There is a cost per person. Children age 2 and under may attend at no cost.
