Recreational Programs Set

Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation will offer programs to the community. Unless otherwise noted, there is a per-person fee, and activities will take place at the Environmental Center in Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature's Way, Lancaster. Additionally, registration and payment are required by noon on the business day before the event. A Grandparent Connection will take place on Saturday, Oct. 16, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on the patio at the Garden of Five Senses, 38 Pontz Drive, Lancaster. The program is designed for children ages 4 to 12 and a grandparent, but all are welcome to attend. The program will offer an opportunity for older adults to pass on a love of nature to the younger generation or just to be inquisitive together. Participants may even pack a lunch to eat afterward.

Gyotako Fish Painting, a program for people of all ages, will be offered from 11 a.m. to noon on Sunday, Oct. 17. Participants should bring a T-shirt or canvas bag to practice the art of gyotako. Each participant can print up to two garments.

Homeschool Wednesday: Ocean Depths will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 20. Students ages 8 to 12 will delve into the conditions in the ocean depths and the animals that are adapted to these conditions. Students will research and present a specific animal to their peers. Participants should wear old clothes and plan for indoor and outdoor activity. Children under age 8 are welcome if accompanying older siblings.

A Full Moon and History Hike for people of all ages will take place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 20. Participants will meet a naturalist at Pavilion 11, 733 Williamson Road, Lancaster, for a hike to the Native American archeological site in Central Park on the night of the full hunter's moon. Participants will walk the paths that Native Americans walked when they lived in the area and learn some history on the way.

Jump Into STEM - Nocturnal Animals has been set for Thursday, Oct. 21, from 10 to 11 a.m. Children ages 3 to 5 will learn about nocturnal animals, examine animal skulls and pelts, play a game, and listen to the animals' sounds.

Thursday in the Park: Owls and Their Pellets will be offered on Oct. 21 from 1 to 2 p.m. Children ages 6 to 9 will dissect owl pellets; in addition to the admission fee, there is a fee per owl pellet, although children may examine fluff from prior dissections in lieu of purchasing a pellet. Participants should dress for indoor and outdoor activity. Children under age 6 are welcome if accompanying older siblings.
