The Righteous Clothing Thrift Store, 317 Main St., Parkesburg, has a new look.
Volunteers have been busy for the past several weeks rearranging merchandise; adding numerous display cases, including new shelving in the front window; and placing clothing on hangers that was previously stored in bins. There is also a new blue banner out front and new lettering on the front door.
Jody Bush, chairperson, said the goal of the store's rebranding is to maximize the use of space and make shopping even easier for customers. "We are getting things out of bins and up and hanging so people can see it," she noted.
One of the biggest changes is the store's front window, which now houses a variety of sale merchandise. "We used to keep jeans in there, so we hung the jeans and (installed) cubicles so we could add more things," said Bush. "In the kids' section, we had (clothing in) bins, but now everything is hanging so you can see it better, and the toys are on shelves."
Other additions include a pegboard in the back of the store where items can be displayed, a larger selection of books and a new display case for glassware.
Also in keeping with the updates, new volunteer Nicole Starner created a thrift store website and is in charge of updating the Facebook page. Nicole's mother, Robin McCormick, also provides assistance.
A ministry of Parkesburg United Methodist Church, the shop is open on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m., on Thursdays from 1 to 3 p.m. and on Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon. The store is also open during Final Fridays in Parkesburg, held on the last Friday of each month, beginning at 5 p.m. Offered for sale at the shop is clothing for men, women and children, along with an assortment of housewares, home decor, collectibles, books and toys.
Items in the thrift store, which are donated by the congregation and community members, are new or gently used. More valuable items, including collectibles, are kept on shelves behind the counter.
New merchandise is regularly added for sale. "To me it is like a treasure hunt. You do not know what you are going to find," said volunteer Gayle McLaughlin. "People are so generous. It is amazing to me what they (donate)."
Proceeds from the store, which opened in 2009, are given to the church and local charities such as the Octorara Area Food Cupboard, the Parkesburg POINT Youth Center and Parkesburg Churches Community Outreach (PCCO).
Volunteers are always needed to help sort and price items and to run the cash register. Volunteers of all ages are welcome, and they do not have to be members of the church. The shop is also in need of donations. Donations of in-season items are accepted during the shop's operating hours or by appointment.
