The Paradise Rotary Club honored four high school juniors as Students of the Month at its Feb. 3 meeting. Joys William from Conestoga Valley was recognized for January, and Anastasija Vukalo from Conestoga Valley, Karli Martin of Pequea Valley, and Matt Friesen of Lancaster Mennonite were honored for February.
Joys is the daughter of Nesreen and Nathan William of Lancaster. She participates in winter and spring track and field and rifle, and she is the manager of the field hockey team. She is president of CV IMPACT, treasurer of Valley Voice, and co-president/club leader of Creative Heart, as well as a member of Link Crew, FOCUS, Mu Alpha Theta, quiz bowl, SADD, Science National Honor Society, Student Council, and Science Olympiad. She has been honored for volunteering more than 300 hours at the Lancaster Science Factory. Joys was nominated for the National Youth Leadership Forum, was selected for the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce Mentorship Program, and received an honorable mention in the 2021 North Museum Science & Engineering Fair. Her activities at her church include the Mahragan Al Keraza Competition, the Pre-Servant Program, the performing art and volunteering. She practices Taekwondo at the YMCA.
Karli is the daughter of Tanya Martin of Paradise. She is captain of the winter cheerleading squad, president of the astronomy club, librarian for marching band, documentarian and social media specialist for jazz band and a member of the World Language Honor Society. She also participates in concert band, the jazz combo, concert choir, the spring musical, the fall play and Irish step dance. She won the PV marching band award.
Anastasija is the daughter of Cedomir and Kristina Vukalo of Ephrata. She is a member of the varsity girls' tennis team, the track and field team, concert choir, Valley Vocals, the Creative heARTs Club, Student Health Council and FOCUS. She was named 2020 Sportsman of the Year and Futures Invitational Flight Champion 2021 in tennis. Anastasija is the vice president of the youth group at St. Nicholas Serbian Orthodox Church.
Matt is the son of Doug and Tina Friesen of Ephrata. He is a member of National Honor Society and the Junior Class Committee. As a member of the varsity boys' soccer team, he has won a section championship and a district championship. He plays club soccer and is a member of the youth group at his church.
