Penn Manor School District schools will be closed through at least Friday, March 27, in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak. According to information provided at http://www.pennmanor.net/covid19, it is undetermined whether that status will change or when the school district may be able to resume normal operations.
The education of students is on hold as district leaders consider options moving forward under the direction of the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
"We have decided not to pursue online learning for our students at this time," district representatives said. "We would not be able to fulfill our legal and ethical obligation to serve every student appropriately via this means, and many of our students lack access to the internet at home."
District buildings were opened to teachers and the public by appointment only beginning March 18. Visitors should call their respective school offices to arrange a visit or to pick up student medications or other important belongings. All buildings are undergoing a deep cleaning, including all carpeting, fabric surfaces, and touch points. Essential school district personnel, with minimal exceptions, began working from home on March 18.
March 13, the last day school was in session, has been officially designated the end of the third marking period. Students' grades will reflect assignments and assessments completed through that date.
A meal distribution plan for students began on March 18, utilizing morning bus stop locations. The free, bagged meals are delivered by school buses and include a lunch, as well as breakfast for the following day. The meals include foods that meet school nutritional standards. At all stops, buses will pull over if someone is visible. A volunteer onboard each bus assists with meal bag distribution.
For elementary students, the meals are delivered by buses at students' regular bus stops each morning at times that roughly correspond with their regular school pickup times. Meals for Penn Manor High School and Marticville and Manor middle school students are delivered each morning to their regular bus stops, but the drop-off times are not the same as their school pickup times. Links to the drop-off schedules are posted at http://www.pennmanor.net/meals.
Meals for students who walk to Penn Manor High School or Eshleman Elementary School may be picked up from 8 to 9 a.m. each weekday at Eshleman Elementary School, 545 Leaman Ave., Millersville.
At all locations, students need not be present for a family member to pick up their meal bag, and family members may pick up meal bags for all members of their family who attend Penn Manor schools from a single location or bus stop. Meals may not be picked up for more than one day at a time.
This distribution plan is subject to change in response to the needs of students' families and bus drivers.
