School Holds Geography Bee

Seventh-grader Peter Mecouch won first place in the annual Martin Meylin Middle School Geography Bee on Jan. 9. Eighth-grader Bethany Barrall took second place.

In the Geography Bee, students answered a variety of geography and trivia questions about the United States and other places around the world. This year, parents and classmates also were invited to play along online for the first few rounds.

The Martin Meylin Social Studies Department ran the bee. Students answered geography-based questions on a variety of topics, including animals, rivers, and state statistics. After the sixth round, finalists switched from the online, multiple-choice format to handwritten answers.

The school bee was the first step in the National Geographic nationwide program. Peter was scheduled to take a written test later in January to determine if he will qualify for the state bee on Friday, March 29. Winners of state competitions will advance to the National Championship in Washington, D.C., in May.

Geography Bee contestants also included Grace Burdge, Bryan Conrad, Gavin Denlinger, Justin Gouger, Noelle Hess, Truman Horst, Aerianna Ile, Josef Dunnenberger, K.J. Kessler, Myles McQueen, Cooper Price, Preston Schonour, Givenchy Warren, Silas Weidman, and Carson Zook.
