Mountville Elementary School held its One Book, One School Community Night event on May 5 as the culminating activity to reading the book "Wishtree" by Katherine Applegate this year. More than 500 people attended the celebration.
One Book, One School is a program that began six years ago. Each year, a book is chosen to be read, discussed, and enjoyed together in classrooms, as a school, as families, and as a community. Every child and staff member receives a copy of the book.
The goals of the One Book, One School initiative include promoting and sharing a love of reading, building community, and creating connections by actively engaging in literacy activities both inside and outside of school. This year's book has themes of kindness, acceptance, and understanding for others, as well as hope for a better tomorrow.
Each year, as the book is finished, the school holds a community night to celebrate. This year, families enjoyed pizza dinners donated by community businesses, made wish ribbons and kindness rocks, planted seeds, roasted marshmallows with members of the Mountville Fire Company, and interacted with police officers from the East Hempfield Township, West Hempfield Township, and Lancaster city police departments.
