Lititz Area Mennonite School (LAMS) has begun its annual Trash-a-Thon. Normally, students, staff, and parent volunteers head out during a day in October to clean up litter along roadsides and at local parks, businesses, and churches. In 2020, with the need to social distance, LAMS families are finding time throughout the month of October to go out together and pick up as much litter as they can. Participants don their bright orange or yellow Trash-a-Thon shirts when participating.
Trash-a-Thon gives students opportunities live out one of the school's core values, "Serving Is Our Strength," based on 1 Peter 4:11. In preparation for the initiative, students learned facts about the prevalence and effects of litter in Pennsylvania.
Trash-a-Thon also serves as a fundraiser for the school's operating budget as students ask people in the community to sponsor them for picking up litter. This year, instead of students knocking on doors, they may leave letters asking community members to consider sponsoring them. Another option is to give online at http://www.lamstrashathon.givesmart.com. At this website, people may click "Items" and use a credit card to donate to the school or to help an individual family meet its fundraising goal.
