No one knows yet what the 2020-21 school year will look like, but whatever happens, the leaders of L-S Together want to ensure that all students in the Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) School District have the necessary supplies.
"With the impact of COVID-19, we recognize the potential greater need to help families in the school district to have all the necessary school supplies for this upcoming school year," said L-S board member Jared Yordy. "The L-S Together motto is 'Pioneering Life Together,' (and that) also applies even during pandemics."
An anonymous donor has pledged to match up to $2,500 in donations - for a total of $5,000 - in order to purchase school supplies for L-S students. The items will be distributed through a back-to-school curbside drive-through event on Saturday, Aug. 15, from 8 to 11 a.m. The event will take place in the bus loop of Hans Herr Elementary School, 1600 Book Road, Lancaster.
Donations may be made at http://www.lstogether.org until Aug. 15. L-S Together founder and chair Jenice Weaver explained that the organization opted to purchase all of the supplies rather than ask community members to contribute items as a safety measure against COVID-19. The drive-through event will also be conducted in a way to ensure everyone's safety.
Changes to the Aug. 15 event are possible due to the impact and nature of the novel coronavirus, Yordy said. Readers may stay abreast of announcements by visiting the website or following L-S Together on Facebook and Twitter.
The board members of L-S Together hope that by providing school supplies, parents and guardians of students will have one fewer cause of anxiety.
"We know the school district has been working hard to make plans in order to create a safe environment for the students this coming school year due to COVID-19," Yordy added. "We appreciate all the time and effort (district leaders) are doing to plan this upcoming school year during these unprecedented circumstances."
