30th Annual Golf Outing Also Planned
The Southern End Community Association (SECA) is looking forward to two big events on this year's calendar. SECA's 30th annual golf outing will be held on Friday, Sept. 4, and the Dash & Splash 5K race and fun run has been set for Saturday, Sept. 12.
The golf outing will be held at Tanglewood Manor Golf Club, 653 Scotland Road, Quarryville. Players should arrive at least 30 minutes before the starting time of 8 a.m. Registration will open at 7:30 a.m. Solanco High School's golf team is slated to host a putting contest, and SECA board members will staff a mobile beverage cart. Past board member Kim Risk noted that the on-course beverage cart was a new addition to the outing last year and was highly successful.
Providence Autos is the hole-in-one sponsor on a designated par-3 hole. "If somebody gets a hole-in-one, they'll have a new car," Risk said. There are opportunities for other sponsorships as well. The deadline for businesses and individuals to sign on as sponsors and be recognized on signage is Wednesday, Aug. 19. The deadline for golfers to register is Friday, Aug. 21. The golf outing typically concludes with a meal and awards presentation. However, due to COVID-19, this year's meal will be a boxed lunch. Every registered golfer will receive a ticket that may be redeemed at Emory's at Tanglewood, the golf course's restaurant, any time after 10 a.m. Risk noted that one benefit of the new format is that golfers may eat whenever they get hungry instead of waiting until the completion of the round.
The golf outing got its start when a group of businessmen put on a golf tournament on the Friday preceding Labor Day as a way to start the long weekend off early. A group of those golfers helped to form SECA's board, and the tournament morphed into an event to introduce people to SECA, Risk said.
"It's a fundraiser for us, but it's also a way for us to let people know what SECA is doing," she added.
The fundraising aspect is especially important this year, related SECA administrative assistant Celeste Esposito. "Like so many (other organizations) have been, SECA has been hit hard (by the shutdown)," Esposito commented.
SECA has not been able to offer as many activities this year, but one event that was scheduled in May has been rescheduled. The Dash & Splash 5K was originally slated as a grand opening for the renovated SECA pool, but even the renovation has been impacted by the shutdown. The manufacturer of the new slide has experienced delays, so that particular feature has not been shipped. The pool has been open this summer, though, and may stay open later than planned.
"The hope is to keep the pool open on weekends in September because it stays hot," Esposito said, adding that those plans are dependent upon lifeguard availability. Keeping the pool open later will impact one other popular event. "Everybody's been calling and asking about the Doggy Dip. We don't have a date for it, but it won't be on the typical Saturday after Labor Day," she said.
The Dash & Splash 5K will begin and finish at the SECA pool, 299 Park Ave., Quarryville, and the course will include the neighboring Solanco Fairgrounds. Registration will open at 8 a.m. The 1-mile fun run for children age 12 and under will start at 9:30 a.m. The 5K race will begin at 10 a.m., and awards will be presented at 11 a.m. Then, everyone with a race bib or fun run medal will be admitted to the pool free of charge. Regular admission rates will apply for the public. The pool will close at 7 p.m. that day.
The deadline to be guaranteed an event T-shirt and receive a discount on the registration fees is Monday, Aug. 24. To register and for more information, readers may visit https://secarec.org/dash-splash-5k-and-fun-run/ or contact SECA at 717-806-0123 or seca@epix.net.
