Before New Life Assembly of God organized its first Trunk or Treat in 2018, church members thought about what kind of event would reach out to local residents. "We wanted (an event) just for the (local) community ... to give back to the community and to be a part of what's going on around here," said Julie Capaldi, who serves as children's pastor. "We wanted to get to know (people) and give them a chance to know us."
Capaldi reported that response to the event was positive. "We had beautiful weather. It was wonderful," she recalled, noting that about 200 area residents came out to relax and chat. Capaldi is hoping for another nice evening when the church holds its second Trunk or Treat at 1991 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster, on Thursday, Oct. 31, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
"Last year, we had 21 trunks, and this year, we hope to have more than 25," said Capaldi, who explained that each vehicle trunk will have its own positive theme. "It could be biblical, a superhero (theme), or sports," she said. "Last year, we had an Eagles trunk and a Penn State trunk, and we had Captain America. He will definitely be there (again)."
In addition to showing off their decorations, trunk owners will give out candy when attendees visit. Additional free food will include pretzels and water. According to Capaldi, each visitor who fills out a registration card will be entered to win a "trunk" prize, which will be a gift basket of goodies.
Capaldi said that the church has also arranged for a member of the East Lampeter Police Department to be available to talk to visitors. The Lafayette Fire Company plans to bring a truck to the venue as well.
People of all ages are welcome at the event, and children are encouraged to dress up in positive costumes. To keep the atmosphere relaxed, there is no schedule of activities for the event.
"We are excited (about the event)," said New Life pastor Ron Bradley. "We are looking for ways to get better acquainted with and serve the community, and this is one of those ways."
Capaldi agreed. "It's a night to have fun and share the love of God," she said.
